Google My Business’ New Rating Filter Explained

Google have now rolled out the ability to filter Google My Business listings to the UK, highlighted in the red box below. They have been testing it in the US for the past few years.

Most sections have Rating and Hours filter but restaurants also have Cuisine.

Why is this important?

This is a very important addition and business owners need to pay attention if they want their businesses to be found in Google My Business. Firstly, when optimising your GMB listing it is important that you make sure all information is included in your listing (obviously a good practise) but more importantly think about the Rating filter.

Why would anyone looking for a good service from a local business not select the 4.5 stars and up.

If your business has a ranking below this or has no ranking then it will be removed from the filtered search and potential customers we not be contacting your business but a competitor instead. See an example below.

The top listing has 5 star reviews, but the two below have average ratings below 4 stars.

Ayegardening is still number but other business are listed below and the two poorly rated businesses are not shown – a disaster for them.

What you need to do

Make sure you have a process to gather Google reviews and make sure you have enough highly rated reviews so that if you do get a poor review your business will still be rated over 4.5 stars.
